This is a community centre located in Dartmoor National Park. The land was donated by Prince Charles. Approval from the Prince and the park authority was a requirement. The projects main source of funding was the National Lottery whose criteria the design also needed to meet. In addition to this there are 8 user groups who each have their own needs.

My design is based on the principles of Christopher Alexander, a writer who Prince Charles advocates and who I wrote my degree theses on.

The centre is situated on a North sloping site with beautiful views across Dartmoor. The main hall, Library, Gym and Entrance are designed to maximise these views. The entrance is centralised to minimise circulation and create a separation between interactive places and intimate spaces. I wrapped the building around the entrance to form a south facing horse shoe in the hope that people linger and chat for a while. Wall to wall glass on the South and the North sides of the entrance foyer frame the view of the moors.

I spent a great deal of time on this project but I got to shake Prince Charle’s hand when he came to open it and more importantly it is well used by the local community and for events & festivals.
