The industrial style has long proved it's here to stay in the design world.  Offering exposure and appreciation of raw materials, cheap options with old, industrial objects from local flea and antique markets and a multi-functional sleekness that most other styles can't provide, the industrial-style kitchen is your best bet to create a new and enlivened space.

Industrial kitchens don't have to be as harsh and as dark as you might think. Instead of dark greys and blacks, think rough, raw wood, sleek concrete and industrial-style pendant light fixtures to top it all off. In no time at all, your industrial kitchen will be the hub of your home.

Include an exposed brick wall

Exposed brick walls are a great design feature to work with, and if you're lucky enough to have one in your kitchen, then congratulations – you're already on your way to a perfectly exposed industrial-style kitchen.

For an ultimate industrial-style feel, white-wash your brick wall like the one seen here and add a chalkboard wall for a fun and simple DIY project. Chalkboard walls are particularly great in kitchens because you can list everything thing from to-do lists, a reminder for ingredients you need or as a way to display your menu for the night to your dinner party guests.

Furniture & kitchen island on chunky wheels

Permanent or temporary islands in a kitchen can add a much-needed space to eat, or can be used for extra storage. With an industrial-style kitchen, you might be asking yourself what style or kind of kitchen island would be best? You should avoid anything too traditional and classic and let raw wood and metal parts speak for themselves.

A temporary, mobile kitchen island is a great way to go as it is removable depending on your needs.  For your best bet, head to your local flea or antique market and take a look at old, classic drafting tables or industrial-style kitchen tables – then, as a fun DIY project, add wheels on the legs yourself – and voila!

Concrete flooring

We love concrete flooring for many reasons – it can come in a variety of styles, shades and colours and it is incredibly easy to maintain.  Just make sure you seal your concrete flooring every few years, or once a year for better measure, and you won't have to worry about scratches, spills and stains.

Concrete flooring is perfect for an industrial-style home or kitchen and its incredible versatility and low-maintenance makes it a perfect addition to any multi-functional home. Add exposed beams and pipes

The number one design feature in any industrial-style space is exposed beams and pipes.  Every style has its signature – for example, a Scandinavian space will have white/neutral walls and classic, retro-fitted Scandinavian design furniture.  Well, with industrial-style that signature is exposure of all raw materials and an acute appreciation for them.

The kitchen pictured here is a great example of how timeless and classic exposed beams and pipes can look, especially when you incorporate the right kind of matching lighting fixtures – just check out the pendant fixtures over the raw wood kitchen table.

Use rough wood or stone countertops

Wood is an incredibly versatile, functional and hygienic material.  An industrial style kitchen, as you've learned by now, incorporates a lot of different materials and this is where the beauty of the industrial-style lies – in the details.

The combination of concrete, exposed pipes and beams and rough wood is a perfect amalgamation for an industrial-style kitchen.  Rough wood will have a cheaper price tag than that which is highly processed, stained and cut.  Purchasing large slabs of rough wood is a cost-effective way to cover work tops and countertops.

Tip: why not do some research to find old, repurposed wood in your area to get an antique-style work surface?

Brighten up the space with a neutral but interesting tile seclection

The metallic essence of these tiles provides a neutralising effect to this otherwise industrial and rustic-style kitchen. The tiles have a great reflective quality that doesn't make them seem as dark as they really are.

Be strategic when choosing tiles like these. Be sure to choose tiles with a reflective quality and remember that an industrial-style kitchen works best with large, square tiles - not small tiles and most definitely not mosaics. Keep it simple!

Choose heavy, factory-style pendant lighting

The true essence of industrial kitchen design lies in the details. Pendant lighting is a great way to give a lot of artificial light to your space while also sticking to your budget and the industrial aesthetic.

You can most certainly find great pendant lighting fixtures at lighting specialists, furniture stores, local flea markets and antique markets.  Typically, you will find these in black and/or metal – however, if you want to add some colour to your space, take some metal paint and colour them any way you choose for a fun and cheap DIY project.
