If you love being outdoors and basking in nature’s magnificence, settling down in a home in the countryside is a great way to experience these feelings year round. Immersion in nature has been linked to heightened creativity, concentration, and relaxation. While traditionally, country homes might be viewed as quite rustic, there are increasingly modern and sophisticated variations to the old school log cabin look. For many, we would even wager that the right combination of pristine natural landscapes and stylish architecture could be a deal maker for those who have considered pursuing a lifestyle that’s more closely connected to the outdoors.

For some inspiration, we bring you this gorgeous little house with a gabled roof by Reitsema & Partners Architects BNA. It is located in the small village of Epse in the Netherlands. The home itself is surrounded by forest, and the design makes taking in the views quite easy. We invite you to come along with us for a closer look at this nature lover’s dream…

Gabled rood and lots of windows

The little house is quite quaint thanks to the gabled roof with a layer of thatching. One of the benefits of modern gabled roofs is that they allow for bespoke windows with lots of height. The result is that the home receives plenty of natural light and pristine views of the surrounding landscape can become part of the interior aesthetic.

Peering in

Face on, the bespoke windows allow us to see inside the home quite clearly. The building consists of an open plan layout with high, slanted ceilings and a loft. The interior is decorated entirely in white, which helps natural light to disperse more thoroughly through the home and makes it look more spacious overall.

Modern interior with subdued rustic accents

In accordance with a current trend of revamping quaint cabins in modern style, the living space is very chic and stylish. The red sofa stands out against a white backdrop, while the black dining chairs and multi-tiered coffee table bring some elements of Scandinavian style to the look.

There are still some traces of true cabin-style rusticity, though. Specifically, the exposed beams and area rug that looks like a tree stump remind us of our surroundings. We also love the beautiful views framed by the windows in the dining area.

Thoughtful details

The home itself is not so big, so the addition of a built-in table, like this one running along the wall, is very useful for storage and organisation. The small fireplace in the wall adds a unique twist on a more traditional hearth setup. The windows above the loft bedroom allow sunlight to filter down into this space that would otherwise not receive as much natural light as the rest of the home.

Lovely loft bedroom

While most of the home is laid out on the first storey, the inclusion of a loft bedroom gives the couple that lives here the feeling of being in a tree house thanks to the exposed wooden rafters and slanted roof. Plus, there is an amazing overhead view of the woodland scenery through the window. What a cosy spot to take a snooze!
