This stunning abode, titled Home with a Bird Bath, was brought to us by Sakurayama Architectural Design; a studio based in Sakurayama of Showa-ku, Nagoya. Engaging closely with the clients needs and desires, the designers aim to build homes that will last – both stylistically and structurally. Employing authentic materials and a strong connection with the outdoors, the homes feel connected to the natural. This home is no exception – oriented to open out onto the private gardens, a wonderful dialogue is established between the various spaces of the home and the exterior. Now let's take a closer look!
The exterior is visually striking – employing a simple material and colour palette, priority is given to the delightful composition. The steel balustrade appropriates the same proportions of the upper level window divisions – elegantly butting into the wall at one of the mullions. Down below, the large window and glass sliders use single panes of glass to seamlessly open to the courtyard space. Natural and light timber decking is met by perfectly manicured lawns and delightful rock gardens.
Natural timber decking is met by lush green lawns and delightful rock gardens. There is an incredible finesse in the detailing of this beautiful exterior. The large sliding doors are protected from the weather via by a concealed box gutter that forms an elegant eyebrow overhead - finished to the underside with perfectly jointed timber soffits and complete with a rain chain – everything is given careful consideration and a remarkable attention to detail.
Recessed window heads and sills make the transition between inside and outside absolutely seamless. These negative details abound – every junction is thoughtful and sophisticated. The change in volumes throughout the open plan social area of the house acts to create variation in the atmosphere of the different spaces; a rhythm is established between the lofty double height volumes and the cosy single height volumes.
Bending around the horse shoe shaped plan, the kitchen finds residence in the link. It is easily accessible from both of the wings, in addition to the courtyard; thus, establishing itself as the social heart of the home. Sitting atop the kitchen is this wonderful light well that floods natural light from the windows into the space below. It is enclosed by a walkway that opens onto a mezzanine space at one side and the roof terrace on the other.
Last but certainly not least – the gorgeous white bathroom is sure to impress. Sunken below the finished ground level, the bath sits flush the rock garden outside. What a wonderful way to enjoy an open air bath that is afforded a little more privacy than usual!
