Whether they live in the heart of the city or just outside in the suburbs, people from all walks of life are downsizing their homes. With the hope of escaping high mortgage rates, many are on the hunt for smaller, more affordable houses.

If you're young or have poor or no credit, there's hope for you yet! Tiny houses are popping up everywhere at economical prices, and we have a few gorgeous ones to show you today. To help you find your perfect home style, we've gathered five small and affordable houses that are sure to get your creative juices flowing.

1. Neutral simplicity

This small home takes pride in its simple nature and muted, calming colour palette. Large sliding glass doors open up the home to a narrow interior with an array of textures and soothing ambience. All areas in and around the home are used in order to maximise space. On the side of the home we have a small secluded sitting area, and above the entrance a balcony.

Inside

The interior boasts natural materials with the hardwood flooring, exposed brick wall, and potted house plants. White walls with a matching white sofa and television stand bring balance, and the LED ceiling light sets the serene mood.

2. Typical cottage

This typical cottage home was given a modern edge with the solid wooden frame around the entrance and timber paneling around the window, and it sits on a raised concrete platform–a typical housing feature in this area.

Natural design

We are met with an open plan upon entering the home. This kitchen area is sectioned off by the utility breakfast bar. Deep brown parquet floors match the the ceiling beam over the bar and this pairing brings a somber tone to the space. White cabinetry and work surfaces help to keep the space bright, and the natural brick accent wall adds just the right amount of rustic to create a relaxed atmosphere.

3. Something very different

If you're looking for something more out of the ordinary on your house hunt, then consider a façade like the one we see here. It's covered in black and white Mediterranean tiles and gives the home a very imposing look–and the cast iron front fence only adds to it. For an extra gorgeous look and for a bit more privacy, these residents grew ivy on the fence.

Economical and cosy

Inside the home is anything but the impactful exterior we just saw. Here, colours are matte and soft. Minimalist ideals play a big part here, and we see that with the lack of decoration and unnecessary appliances. The space is left feeling large and cosy.

4. Panoramic living

This small home has a panoramic view of its surroundings due to the large windows and glass doors around the building. This design optimises natural light inside the home and reduces the need and use of electricity during the day. The timber façade matches well with the bright green lawn and growing shrubbery in the garden.

Raw and bright

As you can see, those windows really do the trick when it comes to illuminating the interior. But of course, light and raw wood furnishings make it even better. We can see the beginning of an eclectically-designed space here with the yellow chair and ottoman set, and not to mention the loft bed setup. This design is perfect for saving space inside and it makes a great multifunctional room.

5. Proper

Our last home in the list will appeal to the elegant homeowner. Stark contrasting colours in the roof and façade create an arresting image, but it's the precision in the line work that makes this home really refined.

Simply luxurious

When you can save so much on housing cost, you can afford to decorate the interior in a luxurious way. But that doesn't always mean having super ornate accessories– it just means going that extra mile for the ultra comfy white leather corner sofa, smooth shag area rug and a few pieces of modern art.

If these homes helped you figure out what you want in a home, then this list of essential things to consider before buying a home might also be useful to you.
