Monochrome comes in many colours – all of them, in fact – but aside from referring to a  colour scheme with hues of all one colour, the term monochrome is also commonly used to refer to a structured, black and white colour scheme.

In this idea book, you'll find ideas for incorporating the clarity, polish, and drama of a crisp black and white monochrome scheme into your own home decor!

1. Give structure to white by adding black

Depending on your existing decor, you may not wish to change your rooms to a dramatically bold black and white scheme. You can achieve a bold effect, however, by adding thick black lines to your white spaces, giving structure and power to surfaces that were previously blank. This mostly-white kitchen achieves a bold black and white look through the addition of a partition wall that's mostly see-through, its thick black frame adding heaps of visual interest to the space between the kitchen and the dining room.

2. Strike a balance

You can add black and white pieces to achieve both a sense of drama and balance in the room, as these two contrasting colours will place a highlight on the far ends of the colour spectrum. Arrange tables, sofas, rugs, and lamps so that the white and black features of the room are evenly or symmetrically distributed to achieved a strong sense of order and balance in your room.

3. Take things up a notch with a simple coat of paint

Your furniture can exhibit a monochrome theme in and of itself – use plenty of painter's tape to mark boundaries, and experiment with a black and white design that brings an additional layer of depth and intricacy to your monochrome theme. This example features a black and white wall painting for a softer take on the monochrome theme as well.

4. Embrace the checkerboard

Think a checkerboard pattern is too bold? Think again. The classic black and white statement doesn't get better than this! A checkerboard design is particularly fitting for a long corridor, dressing room, foyer, or closet space. However, make sure that the size of the squares is appropriate for the size of the floor – smaller spaces typically mean smaller squares.

5. Mix and match

This white and black polka dot floor is quite busy, so the softer look of the wooden planks provides an much-needed respite and excellent contrast. Monochrome themes have a tendency to adopt a look that's stark, refined, and authoritarian – don't be afraid to break up your monochrome theme with surfaces and materials that give the room a more natural, laissez-faire atmosphere.

6. Embrace your personality

Even in monochrome schemes, the world is not just white and black. Monochrome can take on a range of tones, from classic vintage to ultra modern and high tech. This black and white kitchen sticks with sleek surfaces and silver details, creating a futuristic monochrome look. To take your monochrome to the next level, add furnishings to give black and white bit of your own personality. Wondering how to design the room to have a cohesive look?
