The famous seven deadly sins; lust, greed, wrath, pride, envy, gluttony, and sloth. These cardinal sins are to be carefully avoided in order to live a pure and good life, but what about in your own home? The sins are different, but we assure you the consequences are just as dire! Not really, but even so these seven mistakes are worth avoiding if you want your home to look its best. The sins we're going to look at today relate to design errors, poor maintenance, and other classic mistakes that we commonly make in our home, but here at homify we're going to help you set your life, and your home straight!

Nobody's perfect, and we're sure there's at least one sin on the list that applies to you, whether it's leaving the garden to grow wild, or forgetting all about your bathroom, but we're not here to judge, we're here to to provide practical solutions so you'll never have to feel guilty again!

1. A messy kitchen

Number one on our list is probably the most common; a messy kitchen. Because we don't often entertain in the kitchen, and it's usually seen as a purely functional space, sometimes we neglect to keep it tidy and clean. We get it, cooking's fun, cleaning up afterwards is not, but there's a couple of simple things you can do to ensure that your kitchen look its best.

For starters make sure that you have plenty of storage, cabinets for items you use less often, and shelves for those things you're reaching for every meal like the salt and pepper or cooking oil. This will keep the surfaces clear, and make things easier when it comes to our second tip; wipe down the surfaces after every use. A quick wipe will only take a few minutes, but it will stop the grease and grime from building up, preventing foul odours and discolouration.

2. An overgrown garden

If you're lucky enough to have a garden, it's crucial that you take good care of it. Keep your garden trim and well manicured and it will have a positive effect on your home as a whole, and impress any visitors. Plus maintaining your garden is a great way to keep active and reduce stress, so think of it as a hobby, not a chore!

3. Not enough fresh air

There's nothing worse than a dark and musty room, it's uninviting, cold, and will stop you from being able to truly relax, but the answer is simple; fresh air. Fresh air and sunlight can do wonders for your home. It helps to deal with dust and odours, and it keeps the room looking bright and fresh. Make sure that at lest once a day you open the windows wide and let some air circulate throughout the home, even now when the weather is cooling off.

4. Too much clutter in the living room

When you live a busy life your living room can become bogged down in clutter in no time at all. Whether it's books and magazines, or clothes strewn throughout the house, it's important to keep on top of the mess so that it doesn't overwhelm the room. The solution to this is again storage. Make sure you've got plenty of bookcases or shelves so that you have a place to put everything, and consider getting a coat rack so that you're not tempted to just throw your jacket on the sofa.

5. Clashing colour palettes

This is a common design mistake, and a great reason to get in touch with our homify professionals! An expert's eye is a sure way to prevent you from committing this cardinal sin in your home. Choose one colour palette and run with it, just like in this lovely home, where they've let the natural woodgrain set the tone, and matched the furniture with neutral organic colours and a very chic leather couch. 6. Too much furniture

We can all get a little bit greedy when it comes to furniture, it's often tempting to shove in as many pieces as we can, regardless of how much space is available. The end result, instead of being comfy and cosy, tends to be a stagnant room where you can't walk around. Instead measure up your home, and work out how much space you actually have. Keep couches off the wall to ensure plenty of airflow and mobility, and if you're concerned there won't be enough space for guests consider small flexible furniture like these colourful stools that can be put away when you're not using them.

7. A dirty bathroom

It's easy to forget about the bathroom, and it's even easier to remember and decide that it's too hard, but keeping a clean bathroom is the ultimate virtue. It can really affect how your whole house is perceived by guests, plus it's important that you don't cringe every time you run a bath. Give your bathroom a quick clean at least once a week to keep it sparkling, that way there'll be less work, and you won't end up scrubbing the floors for an hour to get rid of stubborn stains.

Well now we know how to avoid these seven deadly sins, it's time to get to work. But before you do, check out these fabulous tips for finding your very own interior design style!
