Meals should be a social experience, allowing the family to get together and prepare for the day or to reconnect in the evening, but it often doesn't work out that way. Maybe because we're too busy, or we're always in a rush, we often don't stop to really enjoy our meals, but we think if you set your home up with devoted spaces you'll find yourself making the time to sit and relax with your morning coffee. And that's exactly why today we're going to look at breakfast bars!

Breakfast bars are a great addition to the kitchen. With pride of place in the lively centre of the home, they allow you to bathe in the rich aromas of coffee and fresh toast, and take a little moment to gather yourself before you head out the door. It may seem like breakfast bars are a luxury in the home, but actually due to their discrete design they can work even in the smallest of spaces. Today we're going to look at some breakfast bars that will look great in tiny kitchens, and will inspire you to install your very own!

Now let's get started!

1. High and compact

This example fits within the traditional sense of a breakfast bar, a high surface with tall stools. Whether you opt for a high bar or one more comparable in height to a table is entirely up to your preference, but the advantages of a tall breakfast bar are apparent.

The height means the stools can be stored underneath when they are not being used, so as not to clutter the area, perfect for small homes. The way they have tied the dark woodgrain into the aesthetic of the kitchen looks so sleek and fabulous!

2. Using both sides

These days a small home doesn't necessarily mean it is a bachelor pad, so if you have a full family a great idea is to place stools on either side of the breakfast bar. This way you can still use the bar for a preparation space when it is needed, but in the mornings you can all sit around it enjoying your breakfast!

3. Around the corner

For those of us especially short on space we have a great idea. Run the breakfast bar perpendicular to the kitchen, so that is functionally connected at the corner, but can run into a different area of the home.

This example uses an otherwise awkward nook in the floor plan to create a functional space, which we think was a really innovative concept. This means you can leave your kitchen open, and increase the flow of a small room. A great space saving solution that looks wonderful!

4. Sparse and modern

We love the industrial vibe of this home, with its brick feature wall and contemporary fittings, and we think the breakfast bar fits the modernist decor perfectly.

A simple and minimalist design, it's always a good idea to pare things down when you are working with limited space.

5. Bright and tiny

Breakfast bars are a great way to delineate function in a small space without completely enclosing an area, which can make it feel claustrophobic.

This perfectly measured breakfast bar makes optimum use of the available space, with the bright yellow details featured in the kitchen and the stools brightening up an area that could otherwise start to feel dark and oppressive.

6. Extending the kitchen bench

Another way to keep your breakfast bar compact is to simply extend the kitchen bench. This unified sink and breakfast bar unit includes storage at the front, reducing the need for extraneous furniture, and more importantly it looks great. We love how the bar is made from the same wood as the cabinets, tying the whole room together, and looking gorgeous!

7. A deep kitchen counter

In a studio apartment, the kitchen is often simply a corner of the home, limiting the possibilities for renovation, but that doesn't mean you have to go without. You can extend the depth of your kitchen counter to allow people a seat in the mornings. This idea is great because you may not even need to do any renovations, simply put a couple of stools on the opposite side of the counter! Remember a breakfast bar is as much a concept as it is a piece of furniture, so feel free to go your own way.

What fantastic designs our homify experts have come up with! We hope we've inspired you to build your own breakfast bar no matter what the dimensions of your kitchen are. Now that you've got your kitchen sorted, for some great bedroom ideas head over here!
