The year of the Rooster has arrived, and with it comes the time to redesign your home for good luck!

According to the art of Feng Shui, the kitchen is one room of the house that plays an important role in determining a family's success. The stakes are high – if you get the design right, you could be laughing for the next year. However, a couple of bad design decisions could affect your happiness for the next 10 months. Even if you don't believe in Feng Shui, it surely can't hurt to try!

Activate health, wealth and happiness in your kitchen by trying out thee five simple tips. Just don't forget to mix up that traditional wisdom with cutting edge modern design – ask a professional to help you achieve the perfect balance.

1. The location of the stove

The layout of the stove is very important in feng shui. Place it close to the entrance so it's immediately visible when you step into the kitchen. Whatever you do, don't let your stove face a wall or be confined to a corner – this will affect the flow of energy within the room by forming a barrier.

However, if you are unable to reorganise the layout of your kitchen then all is not lost. Simple hang a mirror over the stove to redistribute and direct that energy back into the room.

2. Elements of fire and water

The principle elements of feng shui – earth, wood, fire, water, and metal – are a particular concern. In the kitchen, the element of fire should be kept separate from the element of water.

It's not as complicated as it sounds – simply place the stove far away from the refrigerator, sink and dishwasher. This will prevent conflict between the two elements, which in turn will help to avoid misunderstandings between family members. Choose the quiet life and take elemental properties into account before designing your new kitchen!

3. Include vases and bowls of fruit

Vases and bowls lend positive energy to a room. Choose simple, classic glass with minimal patterns and sleek modern shapes to encourage health and happiness in the kitchen.

Don't forget to fill these vessels with the bounties of nature. Keep freshly cut flowers in a couple of corners and fill bowls with colourful fruit and vegetables to add life and vibrancy to the room.

4. Keep the kitchen and dining room clean

Make sure your kitchen is as clean as can be – aside from the Feng Shui reasons, it is vitally important for your health. Neglecting to wash your surfaces and dishes properly can lead to mould and disease, so clean up!

However, did you know that dirt and clutter can prevent positive energy from flowing through your home? Make sure your utensils and appliances are neatly arranged, and keep cutting tools such as knives and scissors firmly stored away to avoid negativity.

5. Choose bright and cheerful shades

Colour is also an important element in Feng Shui. Choose vibrant, fun colours for your kitchen to attract vitality and happiness into your home. Yellow in particular is a great shade, as it is perfect for aiding digestion. Bright colours will liven up the room and bring positivity into your life. Forget minimalism, Feng Shui colour is the way to be!
